Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth discolored?

If you’ve noticed that your teeth are discolored, or they’ve become dull and/or yellow, they may be stained from food, drink, or medication. Some of the most notorious tooth-staining substances include:

  • Red wine
  • Coffee and tea
  • Cigarettes and tobacco
  • Some dark-colored foods
  • Certain medications

Another common reason that teeth become discolored is age. As you age, a few things happen. First, the outer layer of your teeth, called the enamel, starts to wear down. As this happens, the yellow layer beneath it, called the dentin, begins to shine through. This makes your teeth appear more yellow.

Also, as you age, your teeth have more of an opportunity to discolor, simply because they’ve been around longer, and any stains you may have on them have had more time to sink deeper into your enamel.

How does teeth whitening work?

To help you achieve or regain a white, gleaming smile, Savannah Dental offers Philips Zoom!® in-office whitening. Philips Zoom! Whitening works using a bleaching agent that breaks down stains and lightens your teeth.

To begin your procedure, the practice gets you settled in comfortably to your dental chair, and then covers your lips and gums. Once you’re ready, your team fill applies whitening gel directly to your teeth. Then, they shine a bright LED light onto your teeth.

There, the whitening gel and the light interact, making your teeth lighten. The practice performs teeth whitening in three 15-minute intervals. By the end of your visit, your teeth are brighter and up to eight shades whiter than when you walked in the door.

Teeth whitening is completely safe. However, after your treatment, you may notice that your teeth and/or gums feel sensitive.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

Unfortunately, teeth whitening is not permanent. If you practice good oral hygiene by regularly brushing and flossing, as well as avoiding foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, you can typically enjoy the effects of teeth whitening for about a year.

To maintain your pearly smile, try visiting the practice once a year for maintenance.
