Botox Q & A

How does Botox work?

Botox uses the botulinum toxin to target certain muscles and force them to relax. This can help with many cosmetic issues, including:

  • Large muscles in your jowls
  • A gummy smile caused by excessive movement of your upper lip
  • Wrinkles on your forehead

Some of the non-cosmetic issues that may respond to Botox treatment include:

  • Teeth clenching
  • Muscle spasms in your face
  • Jaw tension
  • TMJ

Not every patient with these problems requires Botox. Your dentist can tell you whether Botox is beneficial for your condition.

Is Botox treatment safe?

Like all treatments, Botox poses a small risk of side effects. In rare cases, the protein injected during Botox treatment may spread from the targeted area and affect other muscles. Other possible side effects of Botox treatment include:

  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Mild soreness

In most cases, side effects disappear quickly after the procedure. However, if your side effects don’t go away or are severe, please call the office.

What should patients expect during the procedure?

Most Botox procedures take only a few minutes to complete, depending on the number of injections you need. The procedure isn’t usually painful, and most patients say they feel only a small prick during the injections. However, topical anesthetics may be available if you’re worried about experiencing pain during your treatment.

How many treatments are necessary?

Every patient is different. Some patients may need more than one treatment session to address all of their issues.

The results of Botox aren’t permanent. When the treated muscles begin contracting again, additional treatments can maintain your results. Your dentist can tell you how soon you can expect to need another Botox treatment.

How much does Botox cost?

Several factors affect the cost of your Botox treatment, including the number of injections and the purpose of the treatment. In some cases, your insurance may cover Botox if it’s treating a non-cosmetic problem.
